Blockchain technology is revolutionizing various aspects of our digital world, and one area where it is making significant strides is in Identity and Access Management (IAM).

What is IAM?

IAM is a critical component of IT security that manages digital identities and user access to systems, resources, and data across an organization. With the growing need for secure and efficient identity information in today’s digitized society, blockchain is providing unique solutions that are improving IAM in several ways.

Blockchain and IAM

One of the key benefits of blockchain for IAM is relief from cumbersome paper-based identity management. Traditional methods of managing identity documents can be time-consuming and prone to errors. With blockchain, identity documents can be securely stored and verified digitally, eliminating the need for physical copies and reducing the risk of fraud. Blockchain-based identity management solutions also provide a way for users to recover lost or misplaced documents through a secure and transparent process, ensuring that their identity information is protected.

Another advantage of blockchain in IAM is easier ID verification. Traditional identity management solutions often suffer from complex processes. Blockchain technology can streamline these processes by providing a decentralized and transparent system for verifying identities. For example, blockchain-based Know Your Customer (KYC) portals can simplify identity verification for businesses, making it more efficient and secure.

Self-sovereign identity (SSI) is another concept that is gaining momentum with the help of blockchain in IAM. SSI gives users complete ownership and control over their digital identities, allowing them to manage their information and share it securely with others as needed. Blockchain-based SSI solutions provide individuals with enhanced privacy, security, and control over their personal data, reducing reliance on centralized entities for identity verification.

Blockchain also offers improved safeguards for critical infrastructure. Many critical infrastructures, such as power grids and power plants, rely on password-based authentication systems, which can be vulnerable to cyberattacks. Blockchain-powered IAM solutions can provide stronger authentication mechanisms, such as multifactor authentication, and limit access to critical systems to only authorized personnel, reducing the potential for attacks on critical infrastructure.

Blockchain in IAM Use Cases

Today, the blockchain technology is already being actively explored and implemented for Identity and Access Management (IAM) purposes. One notable case is the Bank of France’s experimentation with digital identities, led by “Le Lab”, the innovation laboratory of the Bank of France. In July, the Bank of France issued a call for contributions for a digital identity project, aimed at digitizing the authentication processes of credit institutions. These experiments could also potentially be used for work on central bank digital currency, indicating the potential of blockchain in reshaping the financial sector.

Another case that highlights the potential of blockchain in IAM is the partnership between the Ministry of the Interior, IRT Nanoelec, and Thales to assess the beneficial effects of blockchain in combating identity theft fraud. Every year, 210,000 French people fall victim to identity theft fraud, and blockchain is being explored as a solution to reconcile security, integrity, authentication, trust, and privacy concerns. The resulting White Paper “Blockchain and Digital Identity” is a collaborative effort that examines the opportunities offered by blockchain in overcoming the challenges of protecting individual liberties and public order in the digitization of identity.

Take Away

Blockchain is bringing significant improvements to IAM by enhancing security, transparency, and control over digital identities. The French Federation of Blockchain Professionals (FFPB) recognizes the potential of blockchain in improving IAM and is committed to advancing the adoption and utilization of blockchain technology in various sectors.
